The BCCI announced their 15-man Team India squad for the ODI World Cup 2023 on September 5. Interestingly, only five Indian batters have played in the ODI World Cup before. With the event starting on October 5, let’s take a look at how the Indian batters have performed in multi-nation tournament.
World Cup 2023 Squad: Rohit Sharma
The Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has made 978 runs in 17 matches in the ODI World Cup. The opener was the top scorer (648) in the last edition of the event, falling 26 runs short of the all-time record.

The right-hander averages 65.20 in 17 innings, with six centuries and three fifties to his name. The right-hander makes 50 or more runs in every second inning and has a good 50% conversion rate.
Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill has not yet played in the ODI World Cup. The right-handed opener has already made 1514 runs in ODIs at a mind-boggling average of 63.08 (second highest in ODI history) and has a quickfire strike rate of 102.64.
Gill has 4 centuries and 7 fifties in 29 innings. The batter also holds the record of being the 2nd quickest player to make 1000 ODI runs (19 innings), behind just Fakhar Zaman of Pakistan (18 innings).
Virat Kohli
Former Indian skipper and ICC ODI Cricketer of the Decade award winner Virat Kohli has the most runs in ODI World Cups among active players (1030 runs).
Kohli has played in three World Cups (2011, 2015, and 2019) and averages 46.81 in 26 innings. The batter also has two centuries and six fifties to his name in the event.
Shreyas Iyer
This will be Shreyas Iyer’s first-ever ODI World Cup. Since his ODI debut in 2017, the Mumbai cricketer has played 44 matches. During this time, the right-hander has made 1645 runs at an average of 45.69 and a strike rate of 96.82.
The middle-order batter has two hundred and fourteen fifties to his name in 39 innings, scoring 50 or more runs in every 2.5 innings he plays.

Ishan Kishan
This will be 25-year-old Ishan Kishan’s first-ever 50-over World Cup appearance. Since making his debut in 2021, Kishan has scored 776 runs in 19 matches at an average of 48.50 and a rapid-fire strike rate of 106.74.
Kishan has a century and seven fifties in 17 innings, meaning that the southpaw scores 50 or more runs in every second inning and has a conversion rate of 12.5%.
KL Rahul
KL Rahul was part of India’s semi-final run in the last ODI World Cup. The right-hander has played 9 matches, scoring 361 runs at an average of 45.12 and a strike rate of 77.46.
The Karnataka cricketer has one hundred and two fifties to his name in 9 innings, scoring 50 or more runs every third inning he plays.
Hardik Pandya
Similar to KL Rahul, this will be Hardik Pandya’s second ODI World Cup. The all-rounder has made 226 runs at an average of 32.28 and a quickfire strike rate of 112.43 in the event. However, the explosive batter has failed to reach the fifty-run mark in the 9 innings he’s played.
Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav made his ODI debut in 2021 and will therefore play his first ODI World Cup. The Mumbai cricketer has made 511 runs at an average of 24.33 and a quickfire strike rate of 101.38 in ODI cricket.
The explosive batter has batted in every position from 3 to 7, scoring 2 fifties in 24 innings. He scores 50 or more runs in every 12th inning and has a poor conversion rate, failing to convert either of his two fifties into a hundred.
Ravindra Jadeja
Jadeja has played 10 matches for Team India in the ODI World Cup. The all-rounder has made 134 runs at an average of 26.80 and a strike rate of 113.55 in these matches.
The southpaw who bats in the lower middle order has scored 1 fifty in 6 innings.
Axar Patel
Despite being in the squad for the 2015 World Cup, Axar Patel has not yet played in the event. The Gujarat cricketer has played 52 ODIs, making 413 runs at an average of 18.77 and a strike rate of 102.48 in these matches.
The southpaw, who has batted from number 4 to 9, has scored 2 fifty in 32 innings for India.
Shardul Thakur
Despite making his ODI debut in 2017, the all-rounder will feature in his first ODI World Cup. The aggressive batter does not have a fixed spot and has batted from number 6 to 9.
Thakur has made 318 runs in 24 innings with a poor batting average of 17.66but strikes the ball at 106. The Mumbai cricketer also has one fifty to his name in 50-over cricket.
