How Dhruv Jurel broke IND vs ENG Test selection news to ‘shocked’ father

Jurel has played only 15 first-class matches, but averages 46 with the bat. Jurel was also part of the India A squad that took on England Lions in a practice match.

Talented batter Dhruv Jurel left his father surprised after he broke the news of getting selected in the Indian side for the upcoming IND vs ENG Test series. The former U19 World Cup team vice-captain, Dhruv Jurel toured South Africa with India A team for 3 four-day matches, which included an intra-squad practice match against the Test team. Jurel had the opportunity to play wth the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli during the intra-squad match.

I was shocked. I was with the India A team, we were playing against the England Lions in a two-day match. The news broke late in the night and when I found out, I immediately called my father to tell him and his first question was, ‘Which Indian team? Aren’t you already playing for one of them?’. I said, ‘The same one in which Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma play’. He couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe it too,” Dhruv Jurel was quoted by ESPN Cricinfo.

The Uttar Pradesh wicketkeeper, who shone for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2023, shared a heartwarming post on social media, thanking his parents after his selection was confirmed. Jurel has played only 15 first-class matches, but averages 46 with the bat. Jurel was also part of the India A squad that took on England Lions in a practice match in Ahmedabad recently.

I think for a middle-class kid, it looks a bit difficult when you wonder ‘how will it happen?’ considering the competition in the country. It’s not a cheap game, we have to manage financially as well. So I walked down a memory lane of how the journey has unfolded so far. I spoke to my mother, father and my sister after the call-up. It was a very good and emotional moment” Jurel said.
