With the World Cup 2023 just two weeks away, Team India finds themselves ranked second in the ICC ODI Rankings. However, the Men in Blue still have a chance to take the number one spot ahead of the World Cup.
The Rohit Sharma-led side is currently placed behind arch-rival Pakistan. Despite India winning the Asia Cup 2023, both sides have 115 ranking points each. Australia’s recent ODI series loss to South Africa (3-2) and Pakistan’s 3-0 win over Afghanistan have helped the Babar Azam-led side maintain their top-spot supremacy.
With just three ODI series (India vs Australia, Ireland vs England, and New Zealand vs Bangladesh) to be played ahead of the World Cup, India, Australia, and Pakistan all have a chance to become the No. 1 ODI side.
Scenarios for India to become the No. 1 ODI side before World Cup 2023
- India can take the No. 1 spot away from Pakistan if they whitewash Australia in the upcoming 3-match IND vs AUS ODI series.
- The Men in Blue can also become the No. 1 side if they lose no more than 1 match to Australia, i.e., win the IND vs AUS series, 2-1.

Scenarios for Australia or Pakistan to become the No. 1 ODI side before World Cup 2023
- Australia can become the top ODI side before the ODI World Cup if they whitewash India in the 3-match IND vs AUS series.
- The only way Pakistan can become the top ODI side is, if Australia beats India, and that too without winning more than 2 matches, i.e., if Australia wins 2-1.
