How can Delhi Capitals still qualify for IPL 2024 playoffs despite ending league stage at 5th?

Delhi Capitals are currently 5th on the IPL standings, with 14 points from 14 games and a net run rate of -0.377. For them to qualify would require a miracle.

The IPL 2024 is at an interesting stage where two teams have sealed their playoff places, three teams have been eliminated and five teams are battling for two playoff spots remaining. Delhi Capitals notched up a win on Tuesday and kept their hopes alive for a playoff place. However, Rishabh Pant and co have already played their group stage games and sit at 14 points from 14 matches. They still have a chance to make it to the playoffs, but it will depend on a number of factors.

Delhi Capitals qualification scenario

Delhi Capitals are currently 5th on the IPL standings, with 14 points from 14 games and a net run rate of -0.377. They could have been in with a greater chance of making it to the playoffs had their NRR been better. However, since they have played all their group games, they will have to depend on others to pull them through.

DC’s fate in SRH’s hands

For DC to make it to the playoffs, Sunrisers Hyderabad, who have two games remaining, have to lose both their matches by huge margins. SRH enjoy a much better NRR (+0.406) than DC. Not even two SRH losses would pull the tide in DC’s favour.

Latest News on IPL

SRH would have to lose the two matches by a cumulative margin of 194 runs for their NRR to get worse than DC. Moreover, DC would have to hope Chennai Super Kings beat Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their last group stage game. Will all these permutations and combinations in place, it is safe to say DC are virtually out of the IPL 2024 playoff race, only the final bell hasn’t rung.
