The ball is one of the fundamental part of the game of the cricket and its making involves a carefully crafted manufacturing process. It is common to everyone’s knowledge what the cricket ball is made of leather. However, what many don’t know is how the ball is made and what is the process that goes behind in making the ball.

Process of making cricket ball

All balls are made up of cork as the core and are encased in a leather case with a raised and stitched seam. It is then wrapped in tightly wound strings and twines.

The ball is made up of four pieces of leather. Then, six rows of string stitches are used to create the seam which is visible on the surface. Internal stitches are then used to bind the final two leather pieces. The ball is then covered by a layer of wax and is polished.

What are the two kinds of leather cricket balls?

There are two kind of leather balls. One is a 4-peice which involves four leather pieces being stitched together using a special thread. The 2-peice ball, as the name suggests, comprises of two pieces of leather stitched together.
