Australia’s new Test opener Steve Smith has received unwavering support from skipper Pat Cummins despite flopping on two out of three occasions. The former Australian skipper, who was named Warner’s replacement in Tests as opener, had a forgettable start to his journey in the new role.
Cummins backs Smith despite flop start
According to Fox Cricket, the Australian skipper claimed that the only deliveries that Smudge hadn’t middled were the two deliveries that he was dismissed in. Cummins maintained that Smith was a classy player who almost single-handedly got the team to a win.
“Other than two dismissals, they are the only two balls he hasn’t looked like he’s middled,” Cummins said in the wake of the loss.
“He’s class, has been class for 15 years. Thought he was brilliant the way he managed the innings then through the different kind of passages and almost single-handedly dragged us over the line.
“He was fantastic; this whole series he’s looked really sharp.”
West Indies clinched a nail-biting win at the Gabba in the AUS vs WI 2nd Test after Shamar Joseph starred with the ball yet again. Smith, who finally broke free from his shackles of poor form, remained unbeaten at 91 runs at the end of play, marking the only positive for the hosts in the game
