Former Indian captain Anil Kumble on Saturday said Shubman Gill is a much better player when he plays with an attacking intent. Shubman Gill has struggled in the ongoing IND vs ENG series. Although the batter has scored a century in the second Test and followed it up with a half-century on the third day of the IND vs ENG 3rd Test, the batter hasn’t looked entirely comfortable.
However, Shubman Gill played a patient innings on Saturday at a time when India needed a good partnership to gain an upper hand in the match. India lost their captain Rohit Sharma early but Shubman and Yashasvi Jaiswal consolidated India’s innings to push India’s lead even further.
While Yashasvi was the aggressor in the partnership, Gill played the anchor’s role and kept rotating strikes. However, the batter did not make mistakes to punish the poor balls and looked assured in his footwork too.
Former Indian captain Anil Kumble, speaking after the day’s play, said Gill appears a lot more assured in his batting when he plays with his usual aggressive approach.
“I think Shubman Gill, when his intent is aggressive, I think he’s a much better player. He’s looking to score runs and that’s the way he plays. But when he gets subdued that’s when his feet doesn’t move and then he goes hard at the ball. But today it was a fantastic,” said Kumble.
