Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) decision to retain Heinrich Klaasen for a whopping Rs 23 crore has left other Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises grappling with heightened expectations from players and difficult negotiations. The move to retain Klaasen, alongside Pat Cummins at Rs 18 crore and Abhishek Sharma at Rs 14 crore, has set a new benchmark, complicating negotiations across the league as other franchises scramble to retain their key players.
Indian Players demand competitive retention fees
The retention of Heinrich Klaasen at such a significant figure has reportedly driven Indian players to demand similarly competitive fees from their franchises, creating challenges for management as they work towards finalising their squads. With the retention window closing on October 31, negotiations have reached a standstill for several franchises who are struggling to secure commitments from top Indian players.
“Once it became clear that Klaasen was being retained for Rs 23 crore, a lot of equations changed on the negotiation table,” a franchise executive shared with The Indian Express. “Indian players are now gauging their market value and are even prepared to enter the auction if their retention deals don’t meet their expectations. Many players are consulting with other franchises to see if they might secure better offers.”
IPL Teams Hesitate to Name Captains
Some teams, including the Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Lucknow Super Giants, have yet to confirm their captains, adding to the retention challenges. “If top Indian players, who bring both skill and brand value, enter the auction, they could attract bigger bids than what their current teams are offering,” said another franchise official. This potential bidding competition has franchises assessing the market as players weigh their options.
KL Rahul, for instance, is expected to end his tenure with Lucknow Super Giants after last season’s hints of friction with team owner Sanjeev Goenka. Similarly, Kolkata Knight Riders are rumoured to prioritise Sunil Narine and Andre Russell over Shreyas Iyer, despite his role in winning their first title in a decade.
