Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina on Tuesday made a big claim about Indian captain Rohit Sharma by saying Rohit is on course to becoming the Next MS Dhoni. Rohit led India to a famous Test series win against England with a match to spare. Rohit’s leadership was lauded by a number of former cricketers as he led the Indian team through multiple injuries and absentees.
Rohit handed debuts to a number of young cricketers including young wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel who starred in the IND vs ENG 4th Test and batter Sarfaraz Khan who scored twin half-centuries on debut in the IND vs ENG 3rd Test. The cricketing fraternity highly appreciated the way Rohit handled the young team and led them to the path to victory. Ian Chappell in his column on ESPNCricinfo hailed Rohit’s leadership, claiming Rohit’s captaincy is often overlooked.
India’s former captain MS Dhoni was famous for providing youngsters with a chance and had a major hand in improving the overall quality of the Indian cricket team. Suresh Raina, who played with MS Dhoni a lot during his career, claimed Rohit was moving in the right direction.
“He is the next MS Dhoni. He has done well. Rohit has been giving a lot of chances to youngsters the way MS Dhoni did. I played a lot of cricket under MS Dhoni. Sourav Ganguly supported his team a lot. Then MS Dhoni came and led from the front. Rohit is going in the right direction. He is a brilliant captain,” Raina said in an interaction with TOI.
‘Rohit handled the pressure and players really well’
Raina was also left deeply impressed by the way Rohit Sharma handled the pressures and the players in the team.
“Rohit has been amazing with his planning. He has been giving a lot of chances to the youngsters. The way he is rotating the players is something I have never seen in the last couple of years. He brought in Siraj and Bumrah. He sent Bumrah back and managed his workload well and then handed debut to Akash Deep. Rohit has been handling the pressure and players really well,” Raina added.
