Prithvi Shaw has made a smashing return to cricket. The aggressive opener scored an imperious 159 in his second match since making a return. The bite-sized dynamo had suffered a leg injury in August last year during his county stint that had ruled him out for nearly six years.
The 24-year-old failed to impress in his first match, scoring just 35. However, in the recently concluded Mumbai vs Chattisgarh match in the Ranji Trophy 2024, Shaw scored 159 in the first inning and followed it up with a 45 in the second to announce his return.
Despite a successful outing, Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar isn’t impressed with the opener. The cricketer-turned-commentator urged Prithvi Shaw to ‘step up’ and work on his technical deficiencies if he wishes to play for the India cricket team once again. While talking with Star Sports, he said:
“Time for him to step up, but what has happened is that a lot of teams have found that because of his predominant movement onto the front foot and that high backlift, they go the short way with him. So unless he starts to learn to play off the back foot, he is going to struggle. If the pitches are such where the ball doesn’t come up, then it will be fantastic for him.”
