There have been questions raised about the decision to leave big-hitting Rinku Singh out of the Indian team for the upcoming T20 World Cup. After last year’s IPL, Rinku became a breakout star. When selected for the national team, he produced outstanding performances with the bat. Rinku amassed 356 runs at a scorching 176.23 in 15 T20I Internationals, going unbeaten in 11 innings. However, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar said Rinku Singh’s lack of chances for KKR colours in IPL 2024 has costed him his place in the Indian team.
Rinku Singh in reserves
Along with Shubman Gill, Khaleel Ahmed, and Avesh Khan, Rinku Singh was named as a reserve in the travelling party. This suggests that the selectors have chosen other players based on their current form and performance. Sunil Gavaskar, a former Indian captain, agreed, attributing Rinku’s exclusion to the left-handed batter’s poor performance in the current IPL.

Lack on batting chances hampered Rinku’s chances: Gavaskar
Venkatesh Iyer was promoted ahead of Rinku in the order. Gavaskar further feels that Rinku didn’t have as many opportunities in KKR’s batting lineup this year. Only 82 deliveries have been played by the 26-year-old batter this season.
“Maybe his form in this particular edition of the IPL hasn’t been great. He hasn’t had that many opportunities (with KKR), maybe that’s the reason why they’ve (selectors) not picked him,” Gavaskar told Sports Today.
