Has Virat Kohli changed? Piyush Chawla refutes Amit Mishra theory about India great

As debates around Virat Kohli’s leadership and personality continue, Chawla’s insights serve as a reminder of the strong relationships and respect that endure within the cricketing fraternity.

In a recent discussion, veteran leg-spinner Piyush Chawla provided a refreshing perspective on Virat Kohli’s character, countering the controversial claims made by Amit Mishra. Mishra had previously stirred the pot by suggesting that Kohli’s behaviour changed after he became India’s captain, a statement that did not sit well with many fans.

Piyush Chawla, however, paints a different picture, emphasising that Kohli remains the same person he has always known.

Mishra’s claims about Virat Kohli

Last month, Amit Mishra made headlines when he claimed that Virat Kohli’s attitude had shifted after he took on the captaincy of the Indian cricket team. Mishra alleged that this change in behaviour strained their relationship, to the point where they barely spoke. These comments led to widespread backlash, with many questioning Mishra’s motives and defending Kohli’s leadership qualities.

Piyush Chawla contrasting experience

Piyush Chawla, who has shared the field with Virat Kohli for over a decade, offered a starkly different account of his interactions with the former Indian captain. Speaking on the ‘2 Sloggers’ podcast, Chawla revealed that he has always had a positive relationship with Kohli. “We played junior cricket together, then in the IPL and for India. Even today, we meet and interact just as we did 15 years ago,” Chawla said.

Heartwarming Asia Cup anecdote

Chawla illustrated his point with a story from last year’s Asia Cup, where he was working as a commentator. During a break in play, Kohli spotted Chawla near the boundary and approached him, suggesting they order some food together.

“He came and said, ‘PC yaar, chal kuch achha sa order karein’ (PC, let’s order something nice). We both are very fond of food. So even today we speak the same way as we did 10-15 years ago,” Chawla shared, highlighting the enduring camaraderie between them.

Mutual respect among leg-spinners

While Piyush Chawla was clear in his admiration for Virat Kohli, he also expressed respect for Amit Mishra. Chawla acknowledged the significant role Mishra has played in his own development as a leg-spinner. “The leg-spinner in question here, I have learnt a lot from him. He is a senior, and the way he has played his cricket and bowled during his career has been fantastic,” Chawla said, ensuring that his comments did not undermine Mishra’s contributions to Indian cricket.

Virat Kohli legacy remains intact

Piyush Chawla’s remarks offer a balanced view amidst the controversy, suggesting that while individual experiences with Virat Kohli may differ, the essence of his character remains consistent for those who know him well.

As debates around Virat Kohli’s leadership and personality continue, Chawla’s insights serve as a reminder of the strong relationships and respect that endure within the cricketing fraternity.
