The upcoming five-match T20I series between India and Bangladesh women’s cricket teams will witness a notable absence behind the stumps. Umpire Tanveer Ahmed, who officiated during the controversial 2023 ODI series between the two nations, will not be part of the officiating panel.
IND vs BAN series marred by controversy
The 2023 India-Bangladesh ODI series was marked by an on-field incident involving Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur and umpire Tanveer Ahmed.
Following her dismissal, Harmanpreet Kaur was seen arguing with Tanveer Ahmed and knocking down the stumps in frustration. This incident resulted in a two-match suspension for Kaur.
Avoiding Further Tension
To prevent similar tensions from resurfacing, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has proactively decided to exclude Ahmed from the upcoming T20I series. A BCB official explained the reasoning to Cricbuzz: “There is a possibility he can again be targeted by the Indian players, and we don’t want that to happen.”
Focus on Smooth India vs Bangladesh Series
The BCB’s aim is to ensure a smooth and focused series for both teams. Ahmed’s exclusion is intended to avoid any distractions or controversies that could overshadow the on-field competition.
Shifting Focus for Tanveer Ahmed
While Ahmed won’t be officiating in the India series, the BCB has included him in the panel for the upcoming Zimbabwe series, which will run concurrently with the India series.
