Harmanpreet Kaur breaks rule in heat of the moment, big controversy averted during WPL 2025 final

WPL 2025 final: The incident happened during the 16th over of the MI innings, when Jess Jonassen trapped Sajana Sajeevan in front of the wickets.

Sometimes, in the heat of the moment, players take some decisions that are not theirs to take. And this is what happened on the night of the WPL final between DC and MI on Saturday, when Harmanpreet Kaur made a DRS signal, when it was not hers to make.

Harmanpreet Kaur Signals for DRS, Albeit for her Partner

While batting with Sajeevan Sajana, Harman went for a review first, when an appeal for an LBW on the bowling of Jess Jonassen was made for her on-strike partner. The latter, of course was given out.

It so happened, that Sajana did not go for the DRS straightaway and went for the signal only after her skipper Harmanpreet had asked for the review from the umpire. It must be made clear, that as per the rules by the ICC, the non-striker cannot take a review for the on-strike batter. While a controversy could have erupted from the DC camp, had the original decision been overturned, but then no damage was done, since it was eventually the umpire’s call.

Sajana Sajeevan Adjudged Out, Controversy Averted

Sajana was out for a duck without troubling the scorers, and unfortunately, on the night of the finals, most of her teammates failed to perform with the bat, just like her. Yastika Bhatia’s poor run in the WPL, where she averaged only 8, ended with a score of 8 as well. One of the top players of WPL 2025, Hayley Matthews was removed for 3 by Marizanne Kapp.

As far as Nat Sciver-Brunt is concerned, she smashed an 89-run partnership with Harmanpreet Kaur. IN fact, the MI skipper’s innings of 66 from 44 deliveries meant that Mumbai Indians reached a defendable, still under par total of 149/7. As for DC, all bowled well, especially Kapp, who returned with figures of 2/11. Jonassen bagged 2/26 in three overs.
