The selection committee for India’s T20 World Cup 2024 team made some audacious choices, including choosing Hardik Pandya—who was not in good form—instead of Shubman Gill and Rinku Singh. In a press conference, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stated that Hardik’s selection was due to a lack of options; however, a later report disclosed that the committee was under pressure to choose the Mumbai Indians all-round player. In response to questions about the T20 World Cup squad, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has now revealed that players cannot be chosen solely on the basis of their IPL performance.
‘Overseas experience needed too’
Shah argued in an interview with the Times of India that when selecting teams for a competition the size of the T20 World Cup, selectors must also take international experience into consideration.

“It has a good balance between form and experience. The selectors cannot choose on the basis of IPL performance alone, as overseas experience is also necessary,” he said.
Who else if not Hardik Pandya?
There isn’t a pace bowling all-rounder with Hardik’s skill set on the Indian squad right now. The only option to Haridk is Shivam Dube, but even he isn’t nearly as skilled with the ball as the Mumbai Indians star.
