Hardik irreplaceable, name for T20 World Cup squad wasn’t debated at all, confirms chief selector

T20 World Cup Squad: Team India has gone with two fast-bowling all-rounders in the team in the form of Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube.

Prior to when Team India was announced for the T20 World Cup 2024, many speculated that Hardik Pandya won’t make it to the squad for the tournament owing to his poor performances in the IPL this year. Cut to Tuesday, when the team was announced, it was speculated, that his name was debated for a long time.

But during the T20 World Cup squad press conference in Mumbai, chief selector Ajit Agarkar made it clear, that there was no reason for Hardik Pandya to be left out. In fact, the former India cricketer clarified, that there no other player who could play a role that he does.

“Hardik Pandya is coming after a long injury layoff and he has looked fit and taken part in all games for MI. I don’t think there’s a replacement for the kind of role he plays. His fitness is critical,” Agarkar said.

On the other hand, skipper Rohit also went on to say that his bowling was crucial to India’s chances in the T20 World Cup. He also opened up on Shivam Dube’s role, and said that, even though the latter hasn’t bowled in IPL, he would be bowling in the upcoming competition.

“Fitness wise there’s no issue with Hardik. As an all rounder, both him and Dube will be expected to bowl and bat as per team’s requirement. Unfortunately Shivam Dube hasn’t bowled in IPL but he is a seasoned all-rounder, bowls regularly in red ball cricket, so both him and Hardik will be bowling.”
