Hardik Pandya’s captaincy stint with the Mumbai Indians (MI) has been all but good. The all-rounder after conclusion of MI’s dismal IPL 2024 campaign has been slapped with a hefty fine and a one-match ban for his team’s repeated slow over-rate offenses.
Hardik Pandya faces consequences
This wasn’t the first time MI lagged behind the stipulated over rate in IPL 2024. As it was their third offense, the IPL took stricter action.
Hardik Pandya, as captain, has also been fined a significant ₹30 lakh and banned from playing their next match which will come in Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025).
Mumbai Indians feel pinch
The remaining members of the playing eleven, including the Impact Player, weren’t spared either. They were each fined ₹12 lakh or half of their match fees, whichever was lower.

Lucknow Super Giants Triumph
The timing of this penalty couldn’t have been worse for MI. The incident occurred during their match against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 17th.
Despite a valiant effort from Rohit Sharma and Naman Dhir with their half-centuries, MI fell short of LSG’s challenging total. LSG’s Nicholas Pooran stole the show with a blistering 28-ball 75, propelling his team to victory.
Disappointing season for Mumbai Indians
This penalty adds insult to injury for MI. The team’s slow over rate woes reflect a larger struggle, as they finished last in the IPL 2024 standings. This marks their second last-place finish in just three years, raising questions about the team’s strategy and performance.

LSG miss IPL 2024 playoffs
While LSG secured a win against MI, their overall performance throughout the season proved costly. They missed out on a playoff spot despite strong showings in some matches. This highlights the importance of consistency in a high-pressure tournament like the IPL.
