Indian batter Yashasvi Jaiswal was the outstanding performer in the IND vs ENG series, amassing a staggering 712 runs against Ben Stokes’ team. Jaiswal’s staggering form and his unwavering maturity impressed one and all, but is Sunil Gavaskar to be credited for Jaiswal’s recent fantastic outing? Gavaskar revealed that he had mildly reprimanded Jaiswal inside an elevator previously for giving away his wicket.
During the just finished five-match Test series against England, Yashasvi Jaiswal excelled at the batting position. In a crushing 4-1 series victory, he was India’s most impressive batter. With the assistance of two double centuries and three half centuries, Yashasvi Jaiswal amassed an incredible 712 runs in a series in which no other batter was able to score more than 452 runs.
Mildly reprimanded Jaiswal: Gavaskar
It’s possible that Sunil Gavaskar was a major factor in Yashasvi Jaiswal’s significant knocks against England. During an interaction with The Hindustan Times, the former Indian captain has disclosed that during India’s recent tour of South Africa, he chastised Yashasvi Jaiswal for losing his wicket cheaply in the series against West Indies. Gavaskar spoke with the young batter and helped him realise the value of turning starts into significant scores.
“It felt very nice to see Yashasvi getting all those runs and the manner in which he dominated the attack. I had mildly reprimanded him in the hotel elevator on Day 1 of the first Test in South Africa for throwing away his wicket in Trinidad (previous Test) after a good 50-plus score and told him never to do the bowlers any favor. Thankfully, he listened to me and got two big doubles in this series,” Gavaskar said.
“He got three other half centuries and forgot what I had told him there. But hey, who listens to anyone when one is in his 20s. I didn’t either. Hopefully, he will go on to bigger things and never forgets that he is what he is because of Indian cricket,” he added.
