The incident occurred during the Sussex vs. Leicestershire match at Hove. Although Pujara did not break the ECB’s Professional Conduct Regulations, his failure to curb Carson’s and Haines’ conduct is the reason behind his suspension.

Pujara suspended by ECB from County Championship
The ECB released a statement following the incident and detailed the reason behind Cheteshwar Pujara’s one match suspension. The statement read:
Regulation 4.30 of the Professional Conduct Regulations sets out that it shall be a separate offence for the captain where the same individual captained the Team in all of the matches in which the fixed penalties were received, and that the captain will receive an automatic suspension of one match from that competition.
Apart from Pujara’s suspension and 12-point deduction, Haines and Carson have also been dropped from Sussex’s next fixture against Derbyshire on September 19.

On the point deduction and Sussex’s conduct as a while, ECB stated:
“Regulation 4.27 of the Professional Conduct Regulations sets out that it will be a separate offence for a Team: “during any season Registered Cricketers registered with or on loan to the same First-Class County whilst playing for that Team in the County Championship, receive 4 or more fixed penalties”.
Regulation 4.29 states that the automatic penalty for such an offence shall be a deduction of 12 points.”
The exclusion of the trio along with the docked points means that Sussex will remain in Division 2 of the County Championship.
