‘All of us believe that GT can still enter IPL 2024 playoff’: Hopeful Shubman Gill

GT's immediate focus will be on their next two crucial encounters against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

The Gujarat Titans (GT) secured a much-needed victory against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Match 59 of the IPL on Friday, keeping their playoff hopes alive, albeit on a thin thread. A dominant batting performance led by captain Shubman Gill and a crucial bowling spell from Mohit Sharma propelled GT to a convincing 35-run win.

Record-Breaking partnership sets stage for GT

Shubman Gill and opening partner Sai Sudharsan stole the show with a magnificent 210-run partnership, equalling the record for the highest opening stand in IPL history. This incredible display of strokeplay laid the foundation for GT’s imposing total of 231/3.

Mohit Sharma spell stifles CSK chase

The GT bowlers complemented the batting effort with a disciplined performance. Mohit Sharma emerged as the star with a match-winning spell of 3/31, dismissing key CSK batsmen like Daryl Mitchell, Moeen Ali, and Shivam Dube. Despite a valiant effort from Mitchell (63 off 34) and Ali (56 off 36), CSK could only manage 196/8 in their chase.

GT retains IPL 2024 playoff hopes: Shubman Gill

Despite the daunting mathematical equation, captain Shubman Gill and the entire GT team remain optimistic about their chances.

In the post-match press conference, Gill acknowledged the slim hopes (previously estimated at 1%) but emphasized his team’s unwavering belief in a potential turnaround. He cited past accomplishments as evidence of the team’s ability to achieve the improbable.

“We always try to have the best combination. Unfortunately Ricky was forced to miss this game due to niggle. We had no other option but to bat with me and Sai Sudarshan as opening pair. And it worked out as well. Before coming to this match, chances of us qualifying in the IPL 2024 playoff were 1 percent. And All 30 of us believe that we can still enter playoffs. Because I have seen miracle happen with this team in past couple of years and we all do believe in that.”

Tough Road Ahead for GT Playoff Ambitions

While the win is a significant boost for GT, their path to the playoffs remains challenging. Currently sitting at eighth in the points table, they need a near-miraculous run of victories to reach the coveted spots.

Their negative net run rate also presents a hurdle, making wins in remaining matches crucial but potentially insufficient. The team from Gujarat will be hoping rain gods to ruin all the matches of their opponents, if they want to have any chance of getting into the playoff.

Focus on Upcoming Matches: KKR and SRH

GT’s immediate focus will be on their next two crucial encounters against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). These matches provide a golden opportunity for the Titans to climb the points table and keep their playoff hopes alive. The team’s spirit and fighting spirit could be crucial factors in their journey towards an unlikely playoff berth.
