GT digs up Sundar Pichai’s tweet after Washington Sundar’s match-winning knock

Washington Sundar smashed 49 off 29 balls and stitched a 90-run stand with Gill to guide GT to a dominating win against SRH.

In the 19th match of IPL 2025, Gujarat Titans (GT) all-rounder Washington Sundar emerged as the match winner. He played an important knock of 49 runs in 29 balls in the chase against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) which helped Gujarat Titans to clinch the win in the away game. Following this performance from Washi, GT revisited an old tweet from Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who had engaged in a discussion about Washington Sundar’s limited opportunities in the IPL.

Pichai’s supportive tweet

The original tweet from Sundar Pichai was in response to a fan questioning why Washington Sundar hadn’t received more chances in the IPL, despite his effectiveness and success with the Indian national team. This discussion resurfaced as the all-rounder showed his potential with a match-winning performance for GT.

Praise from captain Gill

GT’s captain, Shubman Gill, praised Washington’s knock. Gill and Sundar had 90-run partnership which sealed the fate of the game. “We wanted to play shots all along the ground, that was the chat between me and Washington Sundar. He (Sundar) was padded up in the match against MI but with the Impact player rule, you have to change your plans at times. The way he batted today was fantastic. There was no conversation as such, it was all about playing good cricketing shots and once we had a 30-40 run partnership, it was taking the game from there.” he said.

Washington Sundar’s IPL Journey

Washington Sundar’s time with SRH from 2022 to 2024 saw him in a limited role, with most of his appearances (nine matches) in his first year there. Previously, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Sundar also played a restricted role. His most active season during his IPL career was in 2020/21 with RCB, where he made 15 appearances.

Contrasting success with India

Contrary to his IPL roles, Sundar has had a more prominent career with the Indian team. Since his selection for India’s T20I series against Bangladesh last year, he was also picked for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the Champions Trophy squad—although he didn’t feature in the latter.

A hopeful start to IPL 2025

Sundar’s strong performance in IPL 2025 has set a positive tone for his season with Gujarat Titans. Both fans and Sundar hope this form continues, allowing him to play a more significant role in the tournament and further demonstrate his skills as an all-rounder.
