Australian batter David Warner is set to hang up his boots after the PAK vs AUS 3rd Test. Warner has been an important part of the Australian set up since making his debut. Former Australian cricketer Greg Chappell in a newspaper column hailed the southpaw’s contribution to Australian cricket and named the best innings he has seen Warner play.
Warner will play his last Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Australia will be aiming to complete a clean sweep when they host Pakistan in a red-ball match on January 3, 2024. He is part of Australia’s New Year Test team against Pakistan and will be making his final appearance in the format.
After announcing his retirement from red-ball cricket, Warner’s inclusion in the team for the PAK vs AUS Test series was a no-brainer. He got off to a flyer in the first of the three-match series, scoring an unbeaten 164 in the Perth Stadium to lead the hosts to an emphatic win. The selection of Warner initially caused a stir, with ex-bowler Mitchell Johnson, who has had his fair share of ups and downs in his career, arguing that Warner should not be given the opportunity to end his career on a high.
Ton against SA in 2014 Warner’s best innings: Chappell
However, Greg Chappell, in a column in the Sydney Morning Herald about the left-handed batter, chose Warner’s ton against South Africa in the away series of 2014 as the best he has seen.
“When asked which of Adam Gilchrist’s Test innings I liked, I always reply ‘all of them’. I could say the same for Warner. But if I had to choose one, I would plump for his 145 on the 2014 tour of South Africa. It was scored from 156 balls at a strike rate of 93 with 13 fours and four sixes on a difficult pitch against Dale Steyn and company … to win the match, and on top of a century in the first innings,” Chappell wrote in the column.
