Going to change his career: Gavaskar lauds Sanju Samson after maiden ODI ton

IND vs SA 3rd ODI: Sunil Gavaskar claimed that the century will boost Sanju Samson's confidence and will make him believe that the 29-year-old belongs to this level.

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar showered high praise on Indian batter Sanju Samson after latter’s maiden international century in IND vs SA 3rd ODI at Paarl on Thursday.

Gavaskar lauded Samson for restraining his natural instincts and picking the right shots during his 108-run knock.

“That’s the standout for me from this innings was his shot selection where he had gotten out despite getting starts has been the shot selection. He was waiting for the bad ball”, Gavaskar said on Star Sports during mid-innings break.

The former Indian captain also claimed that the century will change the trajectory of Samson’s career, who despite making his international debut nine years ago, has not been able to cement his place in national squad.

“I think this hundred is going to change his career. One, he will get more opportunities with this hundred, but also I think he can start believing himself that he belongs to this level. Sometimes, you know, you are there but some, you know, luck is not with you. Sometimes you get it. Tremendous, delivery. Great, catch bad decision. All these things can make you start to doubt whether you actually belong there. This century will make it believe the he belongs here”, Gavaskar added.

Samson’s 108-run knock powered India to 296/8 in 50 overs. After being put to bat in the series decider, India were reeling at 49/2. But Samson along with Tilak Varma (52) stitched a 116-run partnership to push the visitors towards a good total.
