Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner pull off heist as NZ beat BAN in thrilling Test

Glenn Phillips was once again saviour for the New Zealand, as he along with Mitchell Santner guided the visitors to a thrilling win in Mirpur.

New Zealand all-rounders Glenn Phillips (40 not out) and Mitchell Santner (35 not out) combined to seal a thrilling four-wicket victory for their side over hosts Bangladesh in a gripping four-day encounter in the 2nd Test in Mirpur.

The hosts began the day on 38 for two but the game took a completly contrastring turn when they got bundled out for just 144 on a dry and shifting surface. Ajaz Patel was the star for the Kiwis with his 6-wicket haul, his first notable performance after a historic 10-wicket haul against India in 2021.

Requiring 137 to win, the Kiwi batters had a sense of ‘deja vu’ when they were reduced to 51 for five. While the New Zealand supporters were hoping for Daryl Mitchell – Glenn Phillips’ first innings-like rescue, when Bangldesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto held a low catch at first slip, the hosts were closing in on a historic Test series win.

But Phillips, just like in the first innings, sparked the fightback with aggression and recieved a good support from Mitchell Santner, who put his golf lessons to good use and swung his bats in couple of occasions to keep the score board ticking. The duo took the side home with an unbroken 70-run stand.

The match will be remembered for its controversial surface which yielded 36 wickets in three and a half days. The two sides faced a combined 1069 balls, which is the seventh-lowest ever in a Test match.
