Glenn Maxwell backs Yashasvi Jaiswal to become India’s best Test batter after Sachin Tendulkar

Glenn Maxwell backs Yashasvi Jaiswal to become India’s best Test batter after Sachin Tendulkar

Just 15 matches into his career, Jaiswal has 12 fifty plus scores, which includes a 171 on debut in the West Indies, back-to-back double hundreds in India, and a 161 in his match in Australia.

There’s no doubt about it; Yashasvi Jaiswal is the real deal. At 22, the opener has centuries in three countries, and his lowest score when he hits a ton is 161. Someone has clearly replaced the word hundred with ‘daddy hundred’ in Jaiswal’s vocabulary. But not everyone was totally bought on the young talent. Many feared that he’d fail in Australia, citing his performance in South Africa as an example.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, destined for glory

The critics were initially right as he scored an 8-ball duck in the India vs Australia 1st Test, but he roared back with a glorious 161 in the second innings. He, along with KL Rahul, built the base, which would help the Indian cricket team beat Australia by a whopping 295 runs. After his scintillating display, many have jumped on the Jaiswal hype train. In fact, Glenn Maxwell has gone as far as to say that he’ll score 40 hundreds in Test cricket.

What the explosive Australian batter suggests means that he’ll go past the likes of Virat Kohli, Sunil Gavaskar, and Rahul Dravid, which leaves him behind just Sachin Tendulkar. Of course, that’s still far. Jaiswal’s completely just 10% of what Maxwell expects him to achieve, but right now, one can’t put anything past him.

“He’s ( Yashasvi Jaiswal) a guy that will probably get more than 40 Test hundreds and write some different records. He’s got a great ability to adapt to different conditions,” Maxwell said on The Grade Cricketer podcast.

No chinks in Jaiswal’s armour

Maxwell went on to describe how there isn’t an apparent weakness in Jaiswal’s technique. Coming from India, one expects the southpaw to play spin well, but he looked at ease in Perth, one of the fastest and bounciest pitches in cricket. This fact should scare Pat Cummins‘ team, feels Maxwell.

“It’s going to be scary if Australia can’t find a way to stop him over the next few games. He played a lot of shots that will be on highlights packages, but the stuff he did in between—the balls he left, the balls he got in behind… His footwork is pretty crisp; he doesn’t seem to have many weaknesses. Plays the short ball well, drives well, plays spin unbelievably well, and can absorb pressure for periods of time,” Maxwell added.
