Gambhir’s wish fulfilled! Morne Morkel to join as India bowling coach from Sep 1

Sairaj Bahutule, part of the NCA staff, was India's interim bowling coach for the series against Sri Lanka.

In a significant development for Indian cricket, former South African pacer Morne Morkel has been appointed as the bowling coach of the senior Indian men’s team. The news was officially confirmed by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah to Cricbuzz. Morkel’s tenure will begin from September 1.

Gambhir gets his ‘favourite’ Morne Morkel

Insidesport previously mentioned that Morkel’s tenure at the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) won’t get extended. And after a couple of weeks, the former Protea pacer, who has previously worked with India head coach Gautam Gambhir, will join the Men in Blue as a bowling coach.

Morkel is not new in his coaching career. He was previously part of Pakistan cricket team as well but resigned after a lackluster ODI World Cup 2023 campaign in India. Moreover, Gambhir has allies with Morkel as the duo have previously worked at LSG for two full seasons.

New-look Indian staff to operate from IND vs BAN series

Morne Morkel, who has 544 international wickets to his name, will join a newly appointed Team India coaching staff that includes Gautam Gambhir (head coach), Abhishek Nayar (Assistant coach), Ryan ten Doeschate (Assistant coach) and T Dillip (Fielding coach).

Morkel’s first assignment as India’s bowling coach would be a multi-format home series against Bangladesh, who are scheduled to play two Tests and three T20Is against India. After that, it will be New Zealand, who will lock horns for three Tests as well.
