Gautam Gambhir to have ‘big say’ in Rohit Sharma continuing as India’s Test captain

Rohit Sharma averaged just 6.20 in the last Test series he played (Border-Gavaskar Trophy) and even dropped himself before the final match.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will involve the current India cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir in deciding whether Rohit Sharma should continue as Team India’s Test captain.

Rohit Sharma is India’s Test captain

Rohit had struggled in the last three Test series he played. He scored just 42 runs in 2 matches against Bangladesh, 91 runs in 3 matches against New Zealand, and just 31 runs in 3 matches against Australia.

It had gotten so bad that Rohit had to drop himself for the last Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. There were doubts that he’d be sacked by the BCCI as India’s Test captain, but no announcement came. There was speculation that he would retire from red-ball cricket, but that didn’t happen either.

“Technically, Rohit remains the Test captain. He voluntarily benched himself from the last Test in Sydney, where he explained that a team can’t carry on with multiple out-of-form batters. After the Australia Tests, India hasn’t played any Tests, and hence there has been no change in Test captaincy. Also, Rohit never said he doesn’t want to play Tests,” a BCCI source told PTI.

Rohit played in the Ranji Trophy for the first time after 10 years following that Australia disappointment and has since helped Team India win a second ICC title in 9 months by lifting the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Gautam Gambhir to decide Rohit Sharma’s Test fate

During the break in the international calendar, the BCCI will convene and decide whether or not to persist with Rohit, especially given India will tour England in June. Now that Gambhir has added an ICC title to his name, he’ll have a big say on whether Rohit should continue as India’s Test captain.

“The selection committee gets a break during IPL. Obviously, with all matches televised, they always don’t need to travel unless they have some specific strategy or they want to watch a particular player from up close. So once IPL starts, the blueprint for the England series will be drawn at some point. But (coach) Gautam Gambhir’s viewpoint will have a lot of weightage,” the source added.
