BCCI top brass to question Gautam Gambhir after 1-3 loss in Border Gavaskar Trophy

Gambhir is 6 out of 6 in T20Is but has won just 3 out of the 10 Test matches as head coach and is yet to get a win in ODIs.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called for a Special General Meeting (SGM) on January 12 in Mumbai. The agenda of which is to hold elections for the post of secretary and treasurer. Jay Shah held the post of secretary but has been replaced by Devajit Saikia, who will be holding the post until September 2025.

Arun Dhumal can’t continue as the treasurer, having already completed two full terms. The objective for the BCCI SGM remains clear: the election of office bearers. However, according to the Telegraph India, there is a possibility that Gautam Gambhir and his coaching staff’s performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 might also be a point of discussion.

Gautam Gambhir’s India head coach tenure

BCCI aren’t is expected to take any sort of action, but the ship that the India cricket team is, is looking rocky at the moment. Gambhir took an easy job, so to say. Team India had just won the T20 World Cup 2024, having already been the best side in two longer formats despite no trophy to show for it.

Since Gambhir’s entry, Team India has maintained their T20I dominance but has suffered a massive fall when it comes to results in the longer formats. His only ODI series as head coach saw a 27-year winning streak over Sri Lanka broken as all the batting stars failed in spin-friendly conditions in Colombo.

The Test stint started well with a 2-0 victory over Bangladesh. But since then, the results have fallen off a cliff. Gambhir was handed a team that was the most dominant one at home in cricket’s history, so he proceeded by losing 0-3 to New Zealand. A first home Test series defeat after 12 years and the first-ever whitewash at home in Indian cricket’s 92-year history. It was perhaps the worst series defeat by an Indian team at home.

ICC Champions Trophy, Gambhir’s last chance for redemption?

There was a ray of hope when Team India won in Perth, but then Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma failed in such a manner that people called for their retirements, along with Jasprit Bumrah getting injured, flipping things 180 degrees in a matter of a month. Gambhir isn’t safe now; he may not be sacked, but questions are to be asked. One wonders if not making the ICC Champions Trophy semifinal would be the last straw for the BCCI.
