India’s newly appointed white-ball vice-captain, Shubman Gill, believes that new captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir complement each other perfectly. The statement isn’t exactly shocking, as the duo played together at the Kolkata Knight Riders from 2014-17 and Gambhir even called letting Suryakumar go from the franchise one of his biggest mistakes.
“I think the line of thinking and mindset are on the same page,” said Gill, talking about them at the press conference before the India vs Sri Lanka 1st T20I on July 27. “I had played under Surya Bhai in South Africa too. Their understanding is similar, and I think you’ll get to see the effects on the field as well,” the opener further added.
Communication clear with Gambhir
Although Gill himself played at the KKR for four years (2018-2021), it was after Gambhir left the franchise as a player. Having worked with him for just two days, Gill claimed that communication between him and Gambhir has been clear, and it isn’t just him; all the players know what the new coach wants from them.
“We have only had two net sessions with him. This is my first time working with him. His intent and communication have been clear so far; he knows what he wants from each player.“
Rohit-Dravid to Suryakumar-Gambhir, any changes?
Shubman Gill claimed that nothing has changed despite major changes to the team in the last month. A new coach, captain, and support staff don’t change the fact that they are still the reigning T20 World Cup champions, and the communication remains as crystal clear as ever.
“Communication has been the same like it used to be. We’re the World Champions, and it is about doing more of the same. Hopefully, we get more success with the new coach and support staff.”
