Gautam Gambhir remains tight-lipped on prospects of becoming India’s new head coach

Gautam Gambhir has grabbed all the headlines in the past few week. He remains on the forefront to replace Rahul Dravid as next India head coach.

Amidst the hefty speculation surrounding India’s hunt for a new head coach, Gautam Gambhir has managed to keep the cricketing fraternity guessing with his non-committal stance. Speaking at an event organized by the Indian Chambers of Commerce in Kolkata, Gambhir chose his words carefully when probed about the possibility of stepping into the head of the table role.

‘You are grilling me,’ says Gambhir

“I don’t see that far ahead,” Gambhir cryptically remarked, adding fuel to the swirling rumors about his potential candidacy for new India head coach role. His statement comes hot on the heels of a virtual interview he recently underwent with the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which is tasked with the weighty responsibility of selecting India’s next coach.

More on Gambhir

“You are grilling me, asking me all tough questions. It is difficult to answer right now. All I can say is that I’m happy being here, just finished a brilliant journey (and) let’s enjoy that. I’m in a very happy space right now,” Gambhir said at the event on Friday.

His recent achievement of guiding the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to IPL 2024 title as a mentor potentially took his candidacy to the forefront. Even Anil Kumble expressed his support for Gambhir, stating that he has all the credentials to be the next head coach of the Indian team. When selected, Gambhir’s term as head coach would be for a period of three-and-a-half years, from July 2024 to December 2027. According to reports, he might oversee the team in ODIs and T20Is. WV Raman, on the other hand, could slot in as the red-ball coach for the Men in Blue.
