Gautam Gambhir to be interviewed today as sole applicant for Indian Cricket Team’s head coach role

As Gautam Gambhir prepares for his interview, the cricketing world watches closely. His potential appointment marks a significant moment for Indian cricket, with hopes high for a new era of success and development under his guidance.

Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir is set to appear for an interview today for the prestigious role of the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. Remarkably, Gambhir is the only candidate who applied for the position.

The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will conduct the interview over a Zoom call as per Indian Express.

End of Rahul Dravid tenure

The current head coach, Rahul Dravid, will step down after the ongoing T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had invited applications for Dravid’s successor in mid-May, with the deadline set for May 27, the day following the IPL final.

Gautam Gambhir credentials

Gautam Gambhir, who is also the mentor for the IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders, brings a wealth of experience and success from his playing and mentoring roles.

His candidacy will be evaluated by the CAC, comprising former cricketers Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjpe, and Sulakshana Naik.

Following the interviews, the CAC will make their recommendations to the BCCI, which will then make the final announcement.

Clarification from BCCI

Amidst speculation, the BCCI had clarified that no former Australian player had been approached for the coaching job. Reports had suggested that Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer, both involved in IPL coaching, had turned down offers for the role.

“Neither I nor the BCCI have approached any former Australian cricketer with a coaching offer,” stated BCCI secretary Jay Shah. “The reports circulating in certain media sections are completely incorrect. Finding the right coach for our national team is a meticulous and thorough process. We are focused on identifying individuals who possess a deep understanding of the Indian cricket structure and have risen through the ranks.”

Requirements for India new coach

The BCCI has outlined several key requirements for the new head coach. The candidate must be prepared to handle the pressures associated with coaching high-profile athletes and must focus on developing a world-class Indian cricket team that achieves sustained success across all formats and conditions.

The coach should inspire current and future generations of cricketers and stakeholders with their approach to the game.
