Gautam Gambhir in the line of BCCI’s fire, to be “grilled” after NZ pounding

Following India's 3-0 whitewash in IND vs NZ Test series, head coach Gautam Gambhir is all set to be reportedly grilled over his roadmap for the team's future

India cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir finds himself in the eye of the storm following the series loss in IND vs NZ Tests. Rohit Sharma and co. suffered their first-ever series defeat at home in 12 years as they were handed a 3-0 whitewash at the hand of the Kiwis. A lot of criticism has been directed towards Gambhir following the loss and it looks like the BCCI has very well taken note of it.

Gambhir to be grilled by BCCI after IND vs NZ embarrassment?

As per Times of India, the BCCI is set to question Gautam Gambhir about his vision to take the Indian team forward. Reports also suggested that the board is mulling to grill the former cricketer over the team’s failure despite going against their policies to accept his demands as coach. In a complete overhaul of the support staff following the T20 World Cup, Gambhir got his wish granted as Morne Morkel, Ryan ten Doeschate and Abhishek Nayar being added to his camp.

The decision to go back to rank turners caught a few people in the board by surprise. The new support staff under Gautam Gambhir will be asked about their vision for taking the team forward,” TOI quoted a source as claiming.

The BCCI has agreed to every demand of Gambhir so far. He has been given a support staff of his choice despite BCCI’s policy of promoting coaches they have groomed through NCA’s programme. He has also been allowed to attend the selection meeting to pick the team for the Australia tour. The board may have to revisit its decisions and ask Gambhir for a roadmap,” the source added.

India opted for spin-friendly pitches in Pune and Mumbai for the 2nd and 3rd Test against New Zealand and it backfired. Mitchell Santner and Ajaz Patel turned out to be the tormentor-in-chief for New Zealand as they led the team to a romping series victory by dismantling the Indian batting order. Santner starred in Pune with a 13-wicket haul while Azaj Patel continued his dream run in Mumbai with yet another ten-wicket haul.

How did Indian spinners fare in IND vs NZ series

The Indian spinners weren’t up to the mark, barring Washington Sundar, as they failed to match the might of the Kiwi spinners. Sundar turned out to be the standout bowler for India in Pune as he grabbed 11 wickets across two innings. His good touch spilt over in the Mumbai Test where he finished with five wickets. While Jadeja managed to take 10 wickets in the 3rd Test, he failed to fire in Pune. Ravichandran Ashwin barely managed to taste success in both Mumbai and Pune.
