Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has backed the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision of extending India Cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid’s contract. Gambhir, who has shared dressing room with the former Indian captain, believes BCCI’s decision is a sound one considering the T20 World Cup 2024 is just around the corner.
Dravid took over the Indian team from Ravi Shastri after the 2021 T20 World Cup. His contract ended after the recently concluded ODI World Cup. Reports emerged that Dravid did not want to extend the contract. However, BCCI has been able to persuade Dravid to continue. Although the duration of that contract is undisclosed.
“It’s a good thing because the T20 World Cup is around the corner and you don’t want to change the entire support staff, and it is good that Rahul has accepted it,” Gambhir told ANI.
Along with Dravid, the BCCI has extended the contracts of his support staff too. Batting coach Vikram Rathour, fielding coach T Dilip and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey will all continue their stint.
Gambhir feels that with the T20 World Cup closing in, the BCCI has taken a wise decision.
India had a fantastic run in the World Cup and has dominated every game in the tournament barring the final. Gambhir is hopeful that India keeping this good form going.
“Hopefully, we can continue to dominate and play good cricket, what India has done for a long period of time,” he said.
Gambhir is confident that India will again be a force to reckon with in the 2024 T20I World Cup with the extension of Dravid and Co.
“The T20 format is different and challenging and hopefully, Rahul and the support staff can deliver. Congratulations to them,” Gambhir added.
