Former cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has openly criticised India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, for his handling of the pre-series press conference ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Manjrekar stated that Gambhir “doesn’t have the right words nor demeanour” for media engagements and suggested that he should remain focused on his behind-the-scenes role.
During the conference, Gautam Gambhir candidly discussed India’s disappointing recent performances, notably the 0-3 whitewash at home against New Zealand. “We were completely outplayed,” he admitted, adding that he believes India “deserves the criticism” it has received for such lacklustre displays.
Gautam Gambhir unfazed by Social Media Trolling
Gautam Gambhir, who has faced criticism and trolling on social media since the team’s struggles against New Zealand, expressed little concern over online backlash. “What difference does social media make in my life, or anyone’s life? When I took up this job, I knew it was going to be a highly difficult and prestigious role. I don’t feel the heat because my job is to be absolutely honest,” he stated.
He shrugged off criticism from both fans and cricket experts, noting that challenges were expected when he accepted the position as head coach of the Indian cricket team.
Sanjay Manjrekar doubts Gambhir’s Fit for Media Role
Following Gautam Gambhir’s remarks, Manjrekar voiced his disapproval on social media, questioning the head coach’s ability to communicate effectively with the press. “Just watched Gambhir in the press conference,” Manjrekar posted on X (formerly Twitter). “Maybe wise for @BCCI to keep him away from such duties, let him work behind the scenes. He does not have the right demeanour nor the words when interacting with them. Rohit & Agarkar, much better guys to front up for the media.”
Manjrekar’s comments reflect a broader view that Gambhir’s outspoken style may be unsuited for handling the media, a role that traditionally requires a degree of diplomacy and polished communication.
Gautam Gambhir defends veteran players amidst criticism
In addition to addressing India’s collective struggles, Gambhir staunchly defended the team’s senior players, who have been facing criticism for their recent performances with the bat. Responding to Ricky Ponting’s concerns about the form of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Gambhir replied, “What does Ponting have to do with Indian cricket?” implying that the Australian veteran’s opinions hold little weight in assessing India’s player decisions.
While Gambhir defended his senior players, he remained noncommittal on Rohit Sharma’s availability for the first Test match in Perth on November 22. Should Rohit be unavailable, Gambhir revealed that vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah would lead the team in his absence.
Series Expectations and Team Morale
As India prepares for the challenging Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, the team’s performance—and Gambhir’s approach—will be under close scrutiny. Many fans and former players, including Manjrekar, believe Gambhir would better serve the team in a quieter, operational capacity. Meanwhile, Gambhir’s bluntness and resolve will likely continue to shape his leadership style as India embarks on this high-stakes series.
