India cricket team head coach lauded Virat Kohli for building a strong bowling unit as a young captain. The duo sat down for a free-wheeling chat ahead of the 1st IND vs BAN Test where they discussed a variety of topics. Gambhir heaped praise on Kohli for taking over the reins of the Test team at just 25 years of age and managing to convert the team into a formidable unit.

Gambhir noted that Kohli had taken over the reins from MS Dhoni at a very young age and had succeeded in building a strong bowling unit. The head coach pointed out that Test matches were won by taking 20 wickets and claimed that Kohli’s role in building a strong bowling unit made him one of the most successful captains in the country.
“I can understand what you must have gone through. A 25-year-old boy taking up the Test captaincy and then what you did brilliantly was that you had built a very strong bowling unit. Test matches are won by taking 20 wickets,” Gambhir told Virat Kohli.

He added that it was easy to have six batters in the side but the difference was made when Virat Kohli managed to inspire the bowlers with his attitude on field featuring the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma. Gambhir asserted that the best format to judge a player’s personality was red-ball cricket and maintained that it was the pinnacle.

The former Indian captain has led in 68 Test matches and has an excellent record. Kohli has the best win percentage amongst captains who have played 10 matches. He has won 40 Test matches and lost 17 as captain.
