Gary Kirsten hopes to lift ‘at least one ICC trophy’ in the next two years with Pakistan

Pakistan are scheduled to participate in two more white-ball competitions after the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA. The 2025 Champions Trophy, and the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup.

Former South African batter Gary Kirsten on Sunday was appointed by the Pakistan Cricket Board as the national team’s head coach for the white-ball formats. Kirsten was appointed for two years, and that means he will have three ICC events during his tenure as Pakistan head coach. Kirsten in an interview revealed his aim would be to win any one trophy out of the three major ICC events in the next two years.

3 ICC trophies to fight for in next two years

Pakistan are scheduled to participate in two more white-ball competitions after the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA. The 2025 Champions Trophy, which it has the right to host, and the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, which will be held in both India and Sri Lanka. Pakistan’s Champions Trophy victory in England in 2017 was their final ICC trophy.

Kirsten’s plan

My designation is the white-ball coach. So, 50-over cricket will be as important as T20 cricket. I think the important thing for me is to understand where the team is at and where we want to go to – whether that is winning World Cup events, which, by the way, is not easy. Often some people think you just pitch in and you’re going to win the championship,” Kirsten said.

But, if you can win one of those three ICC Events, that will be an amazing achievement on its own, whether it’s the upcoming event or it’s two years from now. My job is to make sure that the team operates at its best, it’s as simple as that. And if the team is operating at its best, we will always have a good chance of winning a trophy. But if the team is not operating at its best, we won’t and that would be the same for any team,” Kirsten added.
