Gambhir responsible for Bumrah getting injured? Harbhajan criticises management for overworking pacer

Jasprit Bumrah bowled 151.2 overs in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which was just 4 balls less than what Cummins had bowled (most overs) before he got injured on December 4 in Sydney.

Injuries are part of a fast bowler’s life. But, sometimes they can be inflicted by others. That might be the case with Jasprit Bumrah as well. The Indian ace seemed like the only option to get wickets in the India vs. Australia Test series, and so he was used like a machine that doesn’t tire. Bumrah managed to escape unscathed for four Test matches, but his body had had enough midway through the Sydney Test.

Gambhir responsible for Bumrah getting injured?

According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical team, Bumrah has back spasms. Something from which he’ll recover in a couple of weeks. But if it’s something serious and he has to miss the India vs. England ODI series and the ICC Champions Trophy, who must the blame fall on for Bumrah getting injured?

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh blames the Gautam Gambhir-led management for the mismanagement of Bumrah’s workload, which resulted in him getting injured. “He was used like you squeezed juice from sugarcane,” Harbhajan Singh said on his YouTube channel.

“It was like, ‘Travis Head has come; give the ball to Bumrah. Marnus has come; give the ball to Bumrah. Steve Smith has come; give the ball to Bumrah.’ How many overs will Bumrah bowl? He has been reduced to such a condition that he was not available at the end,” the spinner added.

Jasprit Bumrah’s workload needs to be managed

Harbhajan also added that had Bumrah been available to bowl in the second innings, Australia would have had a tough time chasing the 162-run target set by Team India. Of course, that didn’t happen because he was run into the ground for management. In Melbourne, the pacer bowled 9 spells in the second innings while two spinners, who were played for no apparent reason, bowled 7 fewer overs than Bumrah.

“If he had been there, Australia may have won the fifth Test, but they would have lost eight wickets; it would have been tough for them. You broke his back, and the management should have decided on how many overs he should be given,” Harbhajan Singh said.
