Mumbai cricket team’s explosive batter Sarfaraz Khan has been named the side’s skipper for the Buchi Babu tournament. The star, who made his Test debut earlier in February against England, will lead the side in the absence of skipper Ajinkya Rahane. With the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) naming Sarfaraz as skipper, it looks like the team is grooming the star batter as the next skipper.
Sarfaraz Khan to lead Mumbai
The MCA announced the 17-member squad sans Ranahe, vice captain Shams Mulani for the tournament led by Sarfaraz Khan. Alongside Sarfaraz, his younger brother Musheer Khan, who made waves with his performance in the U-19 World Cup, has also been named a part of the side.
While Ajinkya Rahane is currently busy with his County cricket commitments, his deputy during the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 – Shams Mulani – is at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.
In reward for his performances against England in the Test series, Sarfaraz Khan received a Grade C central contract from the BCCI for 2024-25. After scoring consecutive fifties in his debut game in the 3rd IND vs ENG Test, Khan didn’t manage to taste success in the 4th Test. However, he redeemed himself in the final Test with yet another half-century.
Sarfaraz Khan’s wait for his India debut was much delayed, despite his stellar show in the domestic circuit for years.
