‘Future Indian captain’: Robin Uthappa makes huge claim on GT skipper Shubman Gill

Gill played a crucial innings of 35 to help GT chase a target of 142 against Punjab Kings.

Shubman Gill has the potential to lead the Indian team in the near future, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa said on Sunday after Gill’s 35 run innings helped Gujarat Titans beat Punjab Kings in a low-scoring affair at the Mullanpur Cricket Stadium. Gill wasn’t at his fluent best on Sunday, but showed maturity in shaping his innings according to the needs of the game.

Sensible innings

In the end, GT crossed the finish line in Mullanpur thanks to a critical 35 from Gill. Since taking over as Gujarat’s captain prior to the start of the season, Gill has led the team to four victories.

After GT’s victory by three wickets, Uthappa acknowledged Shubman Gill as a gift to Indian cricket and asserted that the star batter is gradually becoming an all-time great while speaking in Jio Cinema. The former cricket player added that Gill is developing into a very effective leader who has the potential to captain the national team.

‘Gift for Indian cricket’

Yeah, I think he’s a gift for Indian cricket. I think he’s some who’s maturing into an all time great within the Indian cricket fraternity. And I think, we’ve seen him thrive, and we’re seeing him grow into a very prolific leader who is going to lead not just his IPL side, but I also think the Indian team in the near future,” Uthappa said on Gill.
