From rags to riches, India’s beloved youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal has been a revelation in 2023. Since his impressive performances in IPL 2023, there has been no turning back for the 21-year-old destructive batter. From selling Pani puri to getting his Test cap for India, the young batter has surely come a long way.
India has been on the hunt for a left-handed batter and Jaiswal matches the requirement after Shikhar Dhawan’s exclusion from the Indian team. Opportunities came knocking at Jasiwal’s door after IPL 2023. He joined the India camp for the WTC Finals after Ruturaj Gaikwad made himself unavailable on account of his marriage.
Rohit confirms, Jaiswal new opener, Shubman to bat at No 3 in 1st Test
Jaiswal traveled to England as a member of the reserve team and got some vital tips from the likes of Virat Kohli and Rahul Dravid in various practice sessions. But now, Jaiswal is set to open the innings for India alongside skipper Rohit Sharma with Shubman Gill moving down the order to bat at number 3.
“We have been desperate for a left-hander opener. Let’s hope, Yashasvi performs well for the team and makes that spot his own,” skipper Rohit Sharma said.
“Gill himself wants to play at No 3. He spoke to Rahul bhai about it as he has done well at No 3 & 4 in the last in domestic cricket. It also helps as we will get left-right opening combination,” Rohit added.
Vice-captain again, Ajinkya Rahane faces battle against time & competition
Though India has a set opening pair in the likes of Rohit and Gill, but there is always a need for a left-hand-right-hand combination that adds a different dimension to the gameplay. And with time and options available for experimentation, Rahul Dravid and Co jumped at the first opportunity to try Jaiswal at the opening slot.
A good performance by Jaiswal in the upcoming Test matches can cause serious dilemmas for Dravid and the selectors. With Gill moving down at number 3, Virat Kohli and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane will bat at number 4 and 5 to consolidate and anchor the innings for India.
