From Maruti 800 to Mercedes: Nitish Rana fulfils promise made to his handicapped father

Nitish Rana had only played one game in IPL 2024 after being ruled out with a finger-injury

A child’s happiness often lies in fulfilling promises made to their parents. That’s exactly what Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) vice-captain Nitish Rana experienced when he bought a Mercedes for his father, fulfilling a heartfelt promise he made to himself as a kid.

“When I bought the Mercedes for my dad, it was incredibly emotional for both of us,” Rana shared during KKR’s “Knights Dugout.”

Promises kept

Nitish Rana, who grew up in a modest household, vividly remembers an encounter that shaped his dream. He was riding with his father in their humble Maruti Suzuki 800, the only automatic car they could afford which they needed with his father being handicapped—when they drove past a sleek Mercedes.

Rana was captivated by the luxury vehicle, but his father quickly told him to look away, saying it was too expensive for them. That simple remark struck a chord in young Nitish, who silently vowed to one day buy his father the same car.

“There was a time when my Dad had a Maruti 800 and he’s handicapped, so we could only afford that automatic car because it was the cheapest. Once while travelling in that, we saw a Mercedes and I really liked it, however, my dad told me to look away because it was very costly,” Nitish Rana said “There and then I decided whenever I have enough money, the first car I would buy would be a Mercedes. “

Fast forward to the present, and Rana is a star in the Indian Premier League, playing for KKR and having represented India in international cricket. When he could finally afford to buy the car of his childhood dreams, he knew exactly who it was for.
