What was expected to be a golden period of Indian cricket has somewhat ended on a disappointing note. Rahul Dravid is likely to part ways after his two-year contract ended with World Cup heartbreak. While the India Cricket Team became World No 1 across all formats for the first time and reestablished India’s home dominance, it did not end the ICC trophy drought. Here’s a look at Rahul Dravid’s coaching record.

Dravid’s legacy will be winning the Asia Cup and retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home as away from home, India lost to South Africa (Test & ODIs), Egland (Test), and West Indies (T20Is). Furthermore, India lost the WTC Final, T20 World Cup and Asia Cup T20 apart from World Cup 2023.

What Dravid did right?

  • Under Dravid, India had a settled squad that won and lost together without a shred of controversy.
  • With Rohit Sharma as the leader, India began playing an attacking brand of cricket that enthralled fans in ODIs.
  • India became World No 1 across all formats at the same time for the first time in history.
  • Bilateral dominance: Under Rahul Dravid, India have only lost once at home to Australia. Before that, India went on a record run of consecutive series wins.
  • Also under Dravid, Virat Kohli regained his lost form to score over 700 runs in the ODI World Cup.
  • Some players got a longer run and it paid off later on. Like Virat Kohli and KL Rahul regained their lost form after a long run of poor form.
  • India retained the ODI Asia Cup.
  • During his tenure, Rahul Dravid had to play with 7 captains with workload management and injuries. Despite that, Dravid managed to find a balance and helped India win.

What Dravid got wrong?

  • With Ravi Shastri at helm, India were a force to reckon with in the away series. India won in South Africa and Australia and nearly won in England.
  • But under Dravid, India have lost to England, South Africa and even West Indies away in different formats.
  • ICC Trophy drought: After missing out on T20 World Cup in Australia in the semifinals, the World Cup at home was the best opportunity. However, despite a dominant 10-match winning run, India lost to Australia in the final.
  • Rahul Dravid often lacked a Plan B when India struggled. A 10-wicket loss to England in the semifinals of T20 WC was a hint. And then, Travis Head blew India away in the World Cup final last week at home.
  • While KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav got a longer run and assurance, Sanju Samson and Axar Patel failed to impress Dravid. They ended up as bits and pieces player for India as they made it to the squad sporadically without role clarity.
