Since the tournament’s inception in 2008, a total of 22 hat-tricks have been recorded, proving that bowlers can thrive even in a format dominated by power-hitters. The first-ever IPL hat-trick was taken by Lakshmipathy Balaji while representing Chennai Super Kings (CSK) against Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in 2008. His achievement, which came in the final over of the match, remains a historic milestone in IPL history.

Lakshmipathy Balaji, who bowled for Chennai Super Kings in the first IPL season in 2008, became the first bowler to record an IPL hat-trick. The only bowler with three hat-tricks is still former India leg-spinner Amit Mishra, who accomplished the feat with three different IPL teams. The only other bowler with multiple IPL hat-tricks is Yuvraj Singh, who claimed two in 16 days during the 2009 South African IPL season.
In 2023, Rashid Khan scored the final of his 22 IPL hat-tricks against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
