Freak incident or wierd physics? Picture of uprooted stump leaves fans awestruck

The incident occurred during a Third Grade competition match in Australia as the Western Districts’ took on Ginninderra

It’s not an everyday sight in cricket that you get to see the laws of physics defied to produce something which no one has seen before. Yup, such an incident occured during a local competition in Australia, the picture of which has gone viral on social media. The viral snap is that of the wickets where the bails are still in-tact despite the middle stump being uprooted!

The bizarre incident occured during the local ACT Premier Cricket Third Grade competition game between Western Districts’ and Ginninderra. As per Canberra Times, the bowler Andy Reynolds began celebrating after uprooting Matthew Bousustow. However, seconds later, Reynolds & co realised that they were witnessing one of the most bizarre things in cricket.

The bails remained in tact as they rested on the leg and the off stump while the middle stump was plucked out of the ground. It took a bit even for the batsman to realise what had happened as Bosustow, who was initially walking back to the pavillion, stopped and made his return to the crease. Naturally, as per the cricketing laws, the batter was given not out by the umpires.

Fans had mixed reactions to the incident, which sparked a debate on whether the decision of the umpire was right otr not. Take a look at some of the reactions:

What does the law say?

The Marylebone Cricket Club states that: “The wicket is broken when at least one bail is completely removed from the top of the stumps, or one or more stumps is removed from the ground”.

Law 29.22 states: “The disturbance of a bail, whether temporary or not, shall not constitute its complete removal from the top of the stumps, but if a bail in falling lodges between two of the stumps this shall be regarded as complete removal”.
