Opener Dean Elgar, who is a Test specialist, might just play his last in the upcoming India vs South Africa series. As per a report in the Rapport newspaper, Elgar is considering retirement. The 36-year-old, who has played 84 Tests for South Africa, has scored 5146 runs at an average of 37.28. Earlier in the year, he was removed from Test captaincy as well, and Temba Bavuma took over.
Meanwhile, the report also claims that Elgar believes he might not be in Test coach Shukri Conrad’s long-term plans. “Just expect the news [of his retirement] to break soon,” Rapport quoted a source. It further talks about how Elgar could have been in the mix for the captaincy role again, for the series against New Zealand, but that might not happen after all.
Tony Brand, the current South Africa A skipper could soon be in the mix if Elgar does retire.
Elgar Not Happy With Treatment Meted Out to Him?
Back in 2018, Elgar had expressed his displeasure over the fact, that he isn’t given much credit for what he’s done. While talking to the Indian Express, he had said, “In my past, I haven’t been given a lot of credit for what I have done. I don’t think there is a big relationship between me and South African cricket fans. A lot of time, what I have done has been brushed under the carpet. People forget that you need cricketers like me in every team.”
