Former India coach questions Virat Kohli decision on captaincy

Virat Kohli's captaincy tenure was marked by significant success. He led India in 68 Test matches, securing 40 victories and achieving a win percentage of 58.82.

Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has expressed his belief that Virat Kohli should have continued as India’s Test captain for a longer period. Speaking on ‘The Rao Podcast’, Bangar suggested that Kohli could have extended his tenure as captain, given his impressive record and leadership qualities.

Successful Test captaincy stint of Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli’s captaincy tenure was marked by significant success. He led India in 68 Test matches, securing 40 victories and achieving a win percentage of 58.82.

Under Kohli’s leadership, India clinched their first Test series win in Australia in 2018 and reached the ICC World Test Championship Final in 2021.

Surprising decision of Virat Kohli to quit Test captaincy

Kohli’s decision to step down as Test captain in January 2022 came as a surprise to many. Despite his continued success as a batsman, Kohli felt it was the right time to hand over the captaincy reins.

Different Perspective

Sanjay Bangar, however, holds a different view. He believes that Kohli could have continued to lead the team effectively and contribute significantly to India’s Test cricket success.

I personally feel that he (Kohli) should have continued slightly for longer as a Test captain,” Sanjay Bhangar said.

“He probably captained India in 65 Test matches, and one of things I feel is that he could have probably continued as a Test captain for a longer period.”

Impact of Virat Kohli’s Decision

Since Kohli stepped down, Rohit Sharma has taken over as India’s Test captain. While Rohit has had his moments, the team’s performance in Test cricket has not been as consistent as it was under Kohli’s leadership.

Legacy of Success

Virat Kohli’s legacy as a captain will be remembered for his aggressive leadership style, his ability to inspire his teammates, and his consistent performances. His decision to step down was undoubtedly a difficult one, but it remains a topic of debate among fans and experts.
