Former England pacer warns India, asks to rest Mohammed Shami ahead of Champions Trophy semis

Former England pacer Darren Gough has advised India to rest Mohammed Shami before the Champions Trophy semifinals to manage his workload.

India has cemented its position in the Champions Trophy semi-finals following New Zealand’s victory over Bangladesh in Rawalpindi. Under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, the team has shown dominance with decisive wins against both Bangladesh and Pakistan. The results have propelled India and New Zealand into the knockout rounds, yet concerns linger over the fitness of India’s leading pace bowler, Mohammed Shami.

Mohammed Shami’s fitness concerns

During the crucial match against Pakistan, Shami left the field clutching his ankle after his opening spell, raising alarm among fans and the team management. Although he returned to bowl eight overs, conceding 43 runs without a wicket, his visible discomfort has been a topic of concern, especially with Jasprit Bumrah already sidelined from the tournament. Despite Shreyas Iyer reassuring the media that Shami is “fine,” his mid-game exit has sparked debate on whether he should be risked in the final group match against New Zealand.

Darren Gough on Mohammed Shami

Former England pacer Darren Gough has advised India to rest Shami to mitigate any potential injury risk. With a semi-final spot secured, Gough suggests that India should capitalize on their strong performance thus far and consider employing an additional spinner given the conditions in Dubai. “They probably should rest him… you can afford to bring someone else in; bring another spinner in Dubai,” Gough told the Hindustan Times, reflecting on the strategic flexibility within India’s squad.

Odds of India winning the Champions League?

Despite fitness concerns, Gough is optimistic about India’s prospects, predicting a possible final appearance and a tournament win. He emphasized India’s balanced team dynamics and robust batting lineup as key strengths. “India look very strong… If I were to say who is going to win it, I will say India,” he said, noting their impressive performances in the Champions Trophy and ODIs against strong teams.

Notably, Gough acknowledged South Africa and New Zealand as formidable contenders but highlighted India’s depth and resilience, even without key player Jasprit Bumrah. “Jasprit Bumrah, the best bowler in the world, is not playing for India. And they still look too strong for everybody else,” he added, underscoring India’s striking form in the tournament.
