First victim of Pakistan’s poor Cricket World Cup, chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq resigns

Amidst poor World Cup performance and PCB's investigation, Pakistan Cricket Team's chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq resigns

The bell has tolled at last! Pakistan Cricket Team’s poor performance in ICC World Cup 2023 has claimed its first victim. Chief Selector Inzamam-ul-Haq has resigned from his post. There has been a conflict of interest against the former Pakistan skipper and with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) set to carry their investigation, Inzamam has resigned from his post.

“People speak without research. Questions were raised on me so I decided that it was better I resign,” Inzamam said in a statement according to Geo News.

“People are making statements without research. I told the PCB to do their research. I have no relation with the player-agent company,” Inzamam clarified.

Conflict of Interest?

It has been alleged that Inzamam is a stakeholder of ‘Yazo International Limited’ which is a player’s agency. A few of the stars that are represented by this company include the likes of Pakistan Cricket Team skipper Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, and Mohammed Rizwan. With Inzamam being a stakeholder of the company and also the chief selector, it surely becomes a major conflict of interest.

Earlier, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decided that they would launch an inquiry into this conflict of interest and should Inzamam be found guilty and his contract terminated then the PCB would have had to pay him hefty compensation.

Earlier on Inzamam-ul-Haq’s conflict of interest issues, PCB chief Zaka Ashraf claimed that the PCB would discuss with the chief selector about the issue.

“Surely, it looks like a conflict of interest. We will call the chief selector and ask him to clarify whether this news is correct or not. But it seems like if Talha has controlled seven to eight players, then he must be the one behind the selection as well. We will ask the chief selector to explain,” Zaka said.
