First series loss for Gautam Gambhir on cards? After memorable tie, India & Sri Lanka to clash in 2nd bout

If Sri Lanka goes on to beat Team India in the ongoing ODI series, this will mark their first ODI series win in bilaterals after 17 long years.

The first ODI between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo ended in a thrilling tie, a result that few would have predicted at the start of the day. Team India choked right at the last moment when they lost two back-to-back wickets.

Rohit Sharma’s brilliance with the bat was a standout feature of the Indian innings, as he once again showcased his mastery in dominating the bowlers. However, the rest of the Indian batting order appeared somewhat rusty. While Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul all looked capable, they failed to convert their starts into substantial contributions.

Another India vs Sri Lanka entertainer?

The India vs Sri Lanka series has surprised everyone thus far. The maiden assignment for Gautam Gambhir has not been a cakewalk. While they won the first two T20Is superbly, the last two games have offered worrying signs. The third T20I went to a Super Over, with India depending upon the likes of Rinku Singh and Suryakumar Yadav, the bowlers, to contribute.

Team India bottled a 230-run chase at the end last night and the clash ended up as only the second-ever tied ODI between the two nations. The tie sets the stage for a fiercely contested second ODI. India will be keen to build on Rohit’s momentum and capitalize on their batting depth.

Focus on Kohli, Iyer, KL Rahul

The likes of Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul will be eager to find their rhythm and hit their straps. Virat Kohli, having rediscovered his form, will be expected to build on his start from the first ODI. His ability to anchor the innings and accelerate when needed is invaluable to the team.

Shreyas Iyer, making his return to the national team, will be under pressure to get his enough runs under his belt. While he was simply out of this world in the ODI World Cup 2023, a substantial contribution from him could be a game-changer. KL Rahul, deservedly playing over Rishabh Pant as a wicketkeeper-batter, will also be keen to contribute more significantly. His role at number five is extremely crucial. Similar to Iyer, Rahul is also making a return to the international setup. With one eye on the Champions Trophy which is next year, Indian fans would be hoping for these modern-day greats to dominate the Lankan lineup.

Sri Lanka to upset once more?

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will be buoyed by their successful defense of a modest target and will look to replicate their performance. The absence of key pacers Matheesha Pathirana and Dilshan Madushanka has undoubtedly weakened their bowling lineup. However, the pitch at Colombo has massively favored their skillful spinners. Their spin trio of Dunith Wellalage, Akila Dhananjaya, and Wanindu Hasaranga proved quite effective in slowing down the Indian batters. Add to that is skipper Charith Asalanka, who utilized his off-spin to a great effect in the previous tied fixture. If they can replicate that performance and exploit any weakness in the Indian middle order, they can give themselves a chance.

The key for Sri Lanka will be to bowl tightly and restrict India to a manageable total. Their batters, led by Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis, will need to build partnerships and capitalize on any loose deliveries.
