Explained: Why RCB were denied 1 run vs MI despite Jitesh Sharma’s not out decision?

Jitesh Sharma was denied a leg bye off the final ball despite being not out on review.

If the game comes down to the final ball, RCB could have a bone of contention with the rules. Jitesh Sharma sneaked in a leg bye off the final ball by Jasprit Bumrah, only for the umpire to disallow it.

What happened on the final ball?

Jasprit Bumrah bowling the final over of the innings, nailed a perfect yorker. Jitesh Sharma went across tried to clear the fence over square leg, only to be trapped on the pads. The RCB batters scrambled through for a leg-bye, while the umpire signalled Jitesh as out.

The RCB batter instantly reviewed the decision. Upon appeal, the impact was termed to be outside off, and the umpire’s decision was overturned. Jitesh Sharma survived, but the umpire signalled it as a dead ball. That meant that the leg bye off the final ball did not count and RCB finished on 221/5 in their 20 overs.

What do the rules say?

As per ICC rules, a ball is declared dead as soon as the umpire gives the batter out. Given the umpire gave Jitesh out, any run taken is hence void and not added to the team’s total.

As per MCC’s laws of the game,

The ball becomes dead when a batter is dismissed. The ball will be deemed to be dead from the instant of the incident causing the dismissal.

If the umpire had judged Jitesh as not out in his initial decision, and the MI would have failed to overturn the review, the leg bye then would still be awarded to the batting side.

In a format where every run is important, it could turn out to be a pivotal moment in the game. In the T20 World Cup game between South Africa and Bangladesh, Mahmudullah was given out LBW off a Kagiso Rabada delivery. The ball had hit his pads and ran off to the boundary. Bangladesh reviewed the call and got the decision overturned, but the runs weren’t awarded as the ball was dead the moment the umpires had initially judged him out. In the end, Bangladesh lost by only 4 runs. RCB would hope that the disallowed leg by doesn’t come to haunt them on Monday.
